Are all important discoveries the result of focusing on one subject?

Of course, most scientific discoveries need endless struggle but I heard that some of discoveries resulted from pure chance or mistakes. You must have heard of 3M Company. This company was known for sticky note which was invented just by chance. The one who invented sticky note wanted to invent strong glue originally but he failed a lot times. One day he tried glue on paper which he expected to be strong but it was not at all. Instead, he found the paper can be attached and removed easily. Although it was a discovery by accident, however, he exerted all possible to invent strong glue prior to find the sticky note. So I consider that lowest effort will be needed to discover something regardless of whether it is what he intended to discover or not.
