It has not been long for Korea to enjoy the current level of freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom of association. Up until 1987, the military coups have occurred many times and the military dictators have seized power. The basic human rights and freedom have not been protected under the military dictatorship. Under the martial law, many universities which students staged anti-government campaigns and demonstrations were closed. Restrictions were placed on the press and political activities were banned. It was June 29, 1987 when Korea adopted the direct election system for the presidency for the first time in Korean history after facing a fierce protest by students and civilians. Many civilians and opposition law makers have risen against the dictatorship and been put in jail or killed during the democratization movement. Korea has advanced a lot in providing freedom, but there are still areas to be improved.
