Do success and happiness depend on the choices people make rather than on factors beyond their contr

Sometime, unpredict case like lottery or fortune make our life diffrent. And To success, fortune is necessary. But i think we can get fortune by my effort. For example, we can get unpredict chance in work. But if we don't have prepared when we meet this chance, we naver get the chance and this fortune go to other person. And i belive my effort never turn me back.
