Compared to the past, Korean culture has an extensive influence globally. The most influential figure in Korean culture would be BTS. The boy band has enhanced its national prestige and visited the White House early this week to discuss hate crime with President Biden as the Asian society representative. Also, various movies have been recognized by celebrated awards such as the Oscar and the Cannes Film Festival. However, I found out that the recognition of Korean culture is turning into a nationalistic movement that is backed by various media. For example, when Parasite has awarded several awards back in 2020, one famous movie critic was severely slammed by netizens by criticizing the movie. Various comments deride the movie critics as a fool for not acknowledging the movie, which prestigious award had. In my perspective, people can have their taste in the culture, and there is freedom of expression which we must guarantee.
