In most cases, we can predict changes in the economy. The index of leading economic indicators (LEI) is intended to predict future economic activity. They are Average workweek (manufacturing), Initial unemployment claims, New orders for consumer goods, Vendor performance Plant and equipment orders, Building permits, Change in unfilled durable orders, Sensitive material prices, Stock prices (S&P 500), Real M2, and Index of consumer expectations. In order for an economic indicator to have predictive value for investors, it must be current, forward-looking and discount current values according to future expectations. Meaningful statistics about the direction of the economy start with the major market indexes and the information they provide about Stock and stock futures markets, Bond and mortgage interest rates, and Commodity prices, especially gold, grains, oil and metals. While the LEI is an important forecasting tool, it has little impact on the bond market.
