Do you think criminals can change?

Although I am a little bit skeptical about the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs for criminals, I would like to believe that people can change. Some books or priests say that no matter how bad you were, you could be a different person. I have not researched it in details whether there are clear and reliable statistics that show that what percentage of criminals turned to be good persons. However, we frequently notice that many criminals commit a crime repeatedly. Due to the high recidivism rate, we tend to believe that "once a crook always a crook." We all have prejudice against them and it is hard to change our perception. Many criminals claim that the social prejudice and people’s stereotype perception make them hard to become a new person. No one hires them and people try to avoid them when they are turned out to be ex-convicts. It could be true to some extent that we are the ones who force them to commit a second or third crime. We suely need to embrace them.
