Recently, I have not heard any policy changes for immigrants in Korea although actual enforcement by the authorities on the ground could be harsh or lenient depending on times and situations. I also do not see any changes in people’s sentiment toward immigrants, compared with a year ago. Actually I believe that people’s attitude toward foreigners has changed favorably although there are still a lot to improve. The number of foreign workers and immigrants have been steadily increasing in Korea and the government and civic groups have been working proactively to improve people’s mindset through various events and campaigns. The government has been offering language education service, child care and parental support to multi-cultural households. However, headline news of a foreigner involved in a crime occasionally hits the nation because of journalism and eventually adversely affects people in forming their view toward immigrants. Such cases should be treated as isolated incidents.
