I believe that South Korean society left behind the global trend of accepting LGBTQ+ society. Also, this is the trend shown in East Asia countries such as China and Japan where Confucianism ideology has been prevalent. There are no direct texts regarding LGBTQ issues on Confucianism, it emphasizes the traditional gender roles and family lineage. This context created tension with LGBTQ ideas. Since old generation of South Korea has been influenced by Confucianism, many adults have issue of accepting LGBTQ. This atmosphere incited widespread discrimination and lack of legal protections on LGBTQ people in South Korea. In 2023, there has been clash in LGBTQ event where the Seoul Queer Culture Festival has been turned away from the venue at last minute. Instead, Christian youth concert took over the event, and it was Seoul Metropolitan Government who came up with this decision. Alongside this, there has been a study in 2013 that 92.6% of LGBTQ Koreans were afraid of targeted hate crime.
