In a western society, age could not be a matter. In most cases, it does not matter how old you are when building relationship. You can be a friend of someone regardless of how young or old you are than the other. However, in the Korean society, age really matters in general. The Korean culture is based on confucianism in which the seniority is regarded as a very important attribute and plays a significant role in building and maintaining the relationship. You should respect a person who is older than you. It is highly appreciated virtue when you show your respect to older people than you. In Korean, there is a word “Hyung” in Korean which means an older brother. In usual, once you build relationship with someone who is older than you, you often call him “Hyung” although he is not a blood brother. But such perception or culture is changing gradually, transitioning to the western society where age is a merely a number, but not affecting the relationship building.
