The Spanish civil war between facists and repulicans was a prelude of the world war two. Liberalists, anarchists, communists who were from different countries in Europe and America fought against the facists in the Spanish civil war. It was not only a civil war but also a ideological war in the war. Ernest Hemingway’s novel ‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’ is in set in the Spanish civil war. The American young man Jordan joins the war as a republican and fight against facist for his faith. The year is 1937 and the Spanish Civil War is in full swing. Robert Jordan, a demolitions expert attached to the International Brigades, lies "flat on the brown, pine-needled floor of the forest, his chin on his folded arms, and high overhead the wind blew in the tops of the pine trees." The sylvan setting, however, is at sharp odds with the reason Jordan is there: he has come to blow up a bridge on behalf of the antifascist guerrilla forces. He hopes he'll be able to rely on their local leader, Pablo, to help carry out the mission, but upon meeting him, Jordan has his doubts: "I don't like that sadness, he thought. That sadness is bad. That's the sadness they get before they quit or before they betray. That is the sadness that comes before the sell-out." For Pablo, it seems, has had enough of the war. He has amassed for himself a small herd of horses and wants only to stay quietly in the hills and attract as little attention as possible. Jordan's arrival--and his mission--have seriously alarmed him. It is impossible not to deeply care for each individual in the story because there are few characters, and they are all extremely well developed. The reader can find a piece of somebody that he/she knows in every character. Hemingway also deals effectively with emotion. It is always easy to understand exactly what each person is feeling. With Robert Jordan, specifically, Hemingway uses a unique series of monologue-type passages so that the reader really can "get inside" Jordan's head. Somehow, Hemingway manages to do this while keeping out that uneasiness one gets when reading a play monologue. The novel has an anti-war feel to it, but it still contains several enthralling battle scenes. Ernest Hemingway emphasizes one young man’s sacrifice and devotion in this novel. But Robert Jordan is so distressed in his own faith and fear of war. Robert Jordan who taught Spanish in the university is not sure about his faith and military mission in spite of joining for the Spanish civil war and the significant mission. To top it all, he falls in love with Spanish lady. But he is so confused between his love and his faith and mission. Guerrillas who Jordan meets are not so ideological and combative, and fettered by betrayal, fear, anxiety, skepticism. Human being is never firm and consistent, so always are not free from the own emotion, and repeat the inner conflict. 1 As most of people know, Korea is divided into two parts as North and South Korea. Because of ideology and political problems. Seen from my experience, I had to go back to Korea when I studied in China to do military service in Korea for 2years. Before doing military service I was so motivated to join the army to protect Korea and its people. So I was able to endure . the very tough military training and guarding in outside everyday. But it was totally different from my imagination. To top it all, I didn’t understand why I had to do that. Although I was so motivated before doing military service, I experience the same thing with Robert Jordan in this book. I asked myself so many times, ‘ They and I are all same Koreans why should I put a gun to them?’ I was confused because of my own faith which is called patriotism and nationalism. So when I finished to read this book, I empathized to Robert Jordan and his mentality trough this book. Ernest Hemingway describes the human being’s personal stories and recorded the historical affair in a material way in this book. And he writes that "The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it." I would agree. Anyone else who agrees, and anyone who has a passion and zest for life should read this book. One of the best examples of American literature in the 20th century. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" has also been regarded as Hemingway's capitulation to critics who barked that his innovative style was too lean, and as a consciously commercial exercise for which Hollywood might (and did) pay handsomely. Robert Jordan, in so many respects, was a tragic mythical hero in the vein of Achilles, Gawain and Samson. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" ranks as one of the great American war novels in a country that has always struggled with the concept of good and bad wars.
