Essay: appearance vs. personality

No one would not disagree that a person’s personality is more important than his/her appearance. We have been taught as such. Even today, media, teachers, and opinion leaders keep emphasizing that we need to make an all-out effort to develop our good personality because personality is of critical importance. However, in reality, person’s appearance seems to play much more a critical role than personality in the modern societies in all aspects. Unfortunately, humans are very visually oriented and what we see of people leaves a lasting impression. Most of us are "instinctively" attracted to good looking, well dressed people. Even in the workplace appearance is seen as an indicator of ability. A job applicant with a master's degree isn't likely to be hired if s/he is ugly, no matter how qualified they are. Right or wrong, in our society appearance is just too important to be ignored. But without a doubt, personality is a better indicator of a person's value.
