What I think is that there should be common subjects that high school students should study, although there could some selective classes that student can choose based on their preference. Until high school, there are fundamental courses that student should study such as math, his/her own mother tongue, and English. The basic classes are necessary for them to study further when they go to college. In Korea, there are basically two types of high schools. One is for entering college and the other one is vocational schools. Each vocational school has its own specialty and teaches its students in accordance with its philosophy of school establishment. Each vocational school has compulsory and elective classes like college. So depending on what type of high school it is, the curriculum varies widely and you have some options to choose your favorite courses to some extent. For instance, if you like cooking and are not interested in going to college, you can go to cooking school.
