In other words, we need to distinguish assimilation that occurs in the absence of coercion within a context of just institutions from coercive assimilation.
What is more important here is that for egalitarian liberals assimilation is not necessary since egalitarian liberalism pursues treating people who are different equally regardless of their differences.
Nevertheless, it is also true that there is no ground to object any voluntary assimilation.
In the next part, Barry explains two kinds of assimilation, and then looks over some historical examples of those.
As mentioned before, the supporters of the 'politics of difference' regard the demand that immigrants should take on the national identity of their new country as oppressive.
Barry argues that whether this is so or not depends on what goes into the idea of a common national identity.
