Title - Legitimation for Rebellion: Critical Review on the 1623 Coup's Political Legitimacy The purpose of this article is to answer the questions about King Injo Restoration of 1623 as follows “what is the concept of restoration?” and “How can it be established and justified?". Two conditions were required in order to justify restoration in terms of Neo-Confucianism. One is the former king’s serious mistakes, and the other is to meet the qualification for servant who can replace the throne. This article argues that the main group of the 1623 Coup tried to legitimize their coup in order to be recognized as a Neo-Confucian restoration, persuading that this coup meets two conditions in the following three dimensions: national, international, and personal level.
