The purpose of this article is to critically review on the 1623 Coup's political legitimacy in terms of Neo-Confucianism as the ruling ideology of the Joseon Dynasty. In order to argue the legitimacy of the 1623 Coup, the earlier studies concentrated on the former king's great faults, or additionally suggested the qualification for servant who can dethrone a king according to Mencius' dethrone theory. Mencius said that it is only allowed to replace the throne if the servant who tries to dethrone a king is a member of royal family or the sage in case he is not a member of royal family, while the former king has great faults. Therefore, the 1623 Coup can be justified in this criteria. However, this paper points out that it has some limits to review on the 1623 Coup based on Mencius' dethrone theory.
