One group is to analyze the empirical cases of traditional East Asia with the western international relations theories such as Realism, Liberalism and Constructivism. Yongjin Zhang, Victoria Tin-bor Hui, and David Kang analyzed the empirical cases in the ancient China and East Asia with the framework of western IR theories and tried to add non-European empirical evidences in order to support the modern IR theories. The other group attempts to establish Chinese theory of international relations using the Confucian ideas and the tribute-investiture system which was lasted for over 2,000 years. Quin Yaquing has explained in his 2007 article why there is no Chinese theory of international relations until now and explored the possibility of establishing Chinese IR theories based on the Confucian ideas.
