Ondol is not only the Korean traditional floor heating system, but also one of the most unique Korean customs and culture.
'On' means warm, and 'dol' stands for a chimney in Chinese.
Therefore, we can easily perceive the ondol is some architecture concerning a hitting system linking a firebox to a chimney.
This peculiar heating system dating back to the Goguryeo Kingdom(B.C.37~A.D.668) made Koreans adopt a "sitting culture."
Early ondol began to be used as both a heating system for a home and heat for cooking.
When a fire was lit in the furnace to cook rice for dinner, the flame and smoke would be sent horizontally through the ondol.
When I was a child, we always took our shoes off and sat on the floor and slept on the floor, instead of using chairs or beds.
The ondol, which is the radiant hitting system, was suitable to the life style of Koreans.
Nowadays, modern-day houses, such as high-rise apartments have a developed version of the ondol system, using pipes embeded under the floor of the room, circulating heated water through them, and warming the floor.
