There exist more than 6,000 languages in the world. Among them, Chinese has the biggest number of its native speakers, followed by Spanish, English and Hindi. Unfortunately, every year several languages die out. In Japanese colonial period, Japanese imperialists tried to choke off Korean language, as part of their policy to obliterate Korean culture including our nation's spirit. Historically, a nation with outstanding culture has never become subject to a power forever. Today very few people use Japanese in our society because Japanese culture couldn't exceed Korean one. Language is not only a tool for communicating, but it is also part of a nation's spirit and cultural heritage. The language diversity means that there exist numerous ethnics in the world. Language means a lot to an ethnic as if it is the same as the people. UNESCO's designation as a World Heritage Site must be meaningful and should be much more encouraged. Minority languages must be preserved because language means people.
