I think parents need to be firm in disciplining their children. The 'firm' means not only being strict but being consistent. I once read an article saying that the worst kind of parenting is not being too strict nor being too soft but being unpredictable. Of course, being too strict or extremely soft are not recommendable and being moderate and reasonable would be the best. Children can understand which behavior is allowed and which is not allowed at least when their parents are consistent on discipline. However if parents are not sure about their own discipline criteria, children would not learn which behavior is allowed. Furthermore, if children feel that their parents criteria is not reasonable, the children might not respect their parents' authority. In that case, it will become more hard to discipline them as time goes by. Therefore, for effective teaching, parents should be firm when they discipline their children.

I also think that with good disciplining techniques, children can become good people.
I also agree that consistency is a must when teaching values and when disciplining young kids because they are taught at a young age about the things that they could and could not do.
