I think sometimes deception has a good result. I also agree that white lie is needed sometimes. Truth is generally a good thing and I agree that sincerity is a desirable trait. However there are situations when deception can bring better result. I was once with my high school class mate few years ago. She got a phone call and I asked her who made a call after she hung up. A girl killed herself and her mother called my classmate and thanked her for being friend with her dead daughter when they are in high school since the dead girl didn't have much friends. However my classmate answered she and her were not that close and she never thought the dead girl as her friend. I was really shocked but my classmate said she just spoke truth. I still think she didn't have to tell so called 'truth' the mother and she should have pretended she and the dead girl were close before. People not always need only truth but also need consolations and that's why deception is sometimes needed.

Your example is a clear proof that sometimes, we have to deviate from the norm.
I totally agree that sometimes, deception is needed when it is for a good cause.
