It depends on how to define accomplishment. If the concept of accomplishment means fulfilling own's duty or making the goal to someone, the accomplishment doesn't have to be the result of freedom to do things his/her way. Doing things one's own way generally sounds positive because it feels like people can take all responsibility and put their effort in something with all freedom. However in real life, following well known know-how often can be the most effective way. Many people have built up precedents and using them to do my own work doesn't mean dependency. On the other hand, if someone is trying to solve a problem deeply related with his/her personal challenge, having a full freedom would be helpful to accomplish the goal. For example, I would accept or easily follow other people's opinion or precedents if my goal is to get a high score in an exam. However if I want to decide which job I will take after graduation, I would prefer to have a whole freedom to think.

There are times when we have to exercise our freedom to decide and there are also times when we have to follow the crowd.
However, I think the secret to true accomplishment is being wise and assertive enough in making decisions and of course, standing up to those decisions no matter how bizarre they may seem.
