How can political pressure from other countries influence a government’s decisions about prisoners?
학생이 쓴 원문
Recently, Venezuelan government released approximately 50 prisoners as part of agreement with US government. Even though the number was short of 100 people which was initially announced, this is huge development in Venezuela which has been a notoriously cracking down on protest and labeling peaceful protesters as political prisoner. Also, this case shows that one country can yield pressure on different nations to free prisoners. As far as I recall, releasing prisoners is done by bilateral agreement. If one nation releases certain number of prisoners, other nation response by freeing equivalent number of prisoners. For example, Ukraine and Russia are swapping prisoner of war in this way. Additionally, United States had to release some Russian spy in exchange of their basketball player and journalist in detainment. Alongside this, several countries can put pressure on a nation in the form of economic sanctions through United Nations to pressure the release of prisoners.
