Talking about the situation in Korea, the education cost takes up 20 to 30 percent of a household income. It is spent mostly for private education because tuition is free up to 9th grade when they go to public schools. Almost all children and young students go to private or cram schools/institutions after school or on the weekends to take additional classes of English, Korean, Math, Physics, Reading, Piano, Swimming, Art, Drawing, Ballet, Taekwondo, even Soccer. According to the survey, Korean households in South Seoul, spend about 650,000 Korean Won a month on average for private education. This is quite a big burden to the Korean economy because the disposal income that can contribute to the economic growth reduces due to the high education cost. This heavy financial burden for educating children discourages young people from marriage and childbirth, which brings down Korea’s birthrate to the lowest in the world. Lessening people’s burden on education is vital to boost economy.
