How do economic or social pressures affect decisions about end-of-life care?
학생이 쓴 원문
In my perspective, if the economy becomes harsher and societal disparities widen, the end-of-life care will become more difficult. Even though most treatments are covered in national insurance scheme, the coverage is relatively narrow, and price of uninsured medical bills is high. According to the research, it costs over US$26,400 in South Korea for just abdominal cancer surgery. Dementia treatment in South Korea also involves significant direct and indirect costs surpassing US$44,100. These severe diseases are only partially covered by national insurance scheme and require private insurance with high premium. Since it is difficult for vulnerable population to pay for all medical costs, there are growing number of people giving up their treatment. This means that lower socioeconomic status correlates with more hospital death and greater financial hardship for families. All of this make good death harder to achieve for disadvantages.
