The purpose of the labour union is to balance the power dynamics between employers and employees. Before then, it was difficult for individual employees to have a frank conversation with their colleagues, out of fear of being fired. Labour unions enabled employees to gain collective bargaining power. Since employees can collectively act through various forms of strike, such as go-slow, call-out ban, and work-ins, labour unions have empowered employees. However, labour unions are also interest groups formed around shared economic interests, and there are instances in which labour unions adopt an overbearing attitude and intentionally impede production to advance their personal interests. Rather than fighting for workers’ rights, they sometimes focus on superfluous agendas. For example, there have been allegations that UK tube workers went on strike in early January, demanding two-for-one Legoland tickets as a perk irrelevant to their productivity.
