How has social media changed the way people think about spicy food?

Social media changed people to think spicy food more of a challenge rather than cuisine. As more people tout their success of eating spicy food with high SHU (Schoville Heat Units), more people jumped into this challenge. I recently came across the post to rank ramen based on the level of spiciness. This trend made a rise in spicy food solely focusing on making it spicier and not considering the balance with other tastes. For example, there is a buldak noodle made by South Korean company, Samyang. Due to the viral video from Korean Englishman channel, there are still various posts on social media to challenge to finish buldak noodles. This hype made the company come up with extra spicier noodles and led with various insanely spicy noodles from other companies. Nowadays, original buldak noodle does not include in top 10 when ranking the world spiciest noodle. Social media has transformed people to regard having spicy food as a challenge by encouraging competitiveness.
