Is it always essential to tell the truth, or are there circumstances in which it is better to lie?

I think sometimes we need to lie. Sometimes the lie makes our relationship smoother and also good to icebreaking. For example, in business or in a relationship whatever they are wearing strange, we have to say "you look so stylish!" to our client. If we always say the truth, maybe our social relationships get worse. When in a blind date even if I don't like that person we can't say directly to him/her. That is kind of tacit rule to live a better life. They also know he/her say lie, but we want to hear good word, not a bad word. So I think it is necessary to tell lie sometimes.
