Um. I don't think so.
They are singer who sing a song.
If they are actor or comedian , they will have to know Japanese.
But singes don't need to master Japanese.
All they have to do is singing well.

I am not sure.
But I can tell you that.
There was a nice drama named "Winter sonata"
It was aired in Japan about 10 years ago.
and It was very booming among Japanese women.
and its popularity has continued so far.
