I disagree that learning about the past has no value for those of us living in the present. Most of all, If we didn't experience past's failure or success, the future is also can't exist. We can learn from the past, even if the past is failure. Human can't change that easily. To change our life, we need to be shocked from the past experience. It is called "turning point". For example, If I'm not sick last year, I couldn't catch the chance to look my previous life and decide my future way and goal, even I couldn't decide to take this English class. I defiantly think since we have past, we can develop our future and it is good to live in the present more preciously and hopefully.
