I think parenting has changed throughout the ages in case of Korea. There are two viewpoints to back up my opinion. One is that parenting role from each parent has changed. Traditionally there was a huge gap between fathers’ role and mothers’ role in parenting in Korea. Fathers were mostly very authoritarian while mothers were generous to their kids against the backdrop of our patriarchal society. Nowadays, as more women are entering the workforce even after giving birth, this social phenomenon bridges the gap between both parents. The other is that permissive parenting is rampant since many parents have just one child these days. Raising a child is very costly now, many parents give up having second child. That is why many parents let their only child have his or her own way. This overindulgent parenting becomes common in our society, which is hardly seen in the past.
