Should students think more about job prospects before deciding to pursue a PhD?

Some are pursuing degrees due to academic interest; others study advanced degrees because they are left with no choices from high unemployment rate and competitive job market. In Korea, many students advance to higher degrees when the job prospect is low. However, there are many instances that show it is dangerous to pursue PhD degree without consideration for their future career. This is because of two reasons. First, the talent pool for PhD students is shallow. There are not many jobs that require PhD level education because many companies prefer to teach employees through hands-on experience. The knowledge that PhD graduates can bring is more theory based which is outdated and impractical for many corporations. Alongside this, many corporations prefer candidates with experience which lacks in PhD graduates. This is because they spend minimum 10 years at schools including bachelors and master’s while others spend that time reinforcing their experiences and building up skillsets.
