It is important for universities to hold various departments. This is not only to attract students but also to ensure government funding. According to the research, the government funding varies based on school type (college or university) or how many departments each university holds. I believe it is why professors at Gwangju university took examination for their students and eventually breached the regulation. However, I believe that keeping department open by breaking the rules only gives short-term solutions. South Korea birth rate is the lowest amongst OECD students so there will not be enough student in near future. Accordingly, universities must come up with long-term solutions such as hosting more foreign students, consolidating with nearby universities or opening more major to cater to students’ demand. Hosting foreign students is one of the feasible options because the interest in Korean society and academia is on its’ peak due to the K-wave.
