1. Both are correct ,but they are used in different occasions or as an answer to different kind of questions.

When someone is inquiring about your nationality.
\'What is your nationality?\'
\'I am [Name]\'
\'Are you British?\'
\'No, I am [Name].\'
When you state it as a fact as part of your self-introduction referring to yourself as an American among other Americans you use \'an American\'.
\'I am an American living in France.\'
\'I am an American working overseas for a multinational company.\'
2. Wrong = I will am going to see my wife\'s family this weekend.
>> I am going to see my wife\'s family this weekend.
>> OR: I will go out to see my wife\'s family this weekend.
3. The possessive form is used with nouns referring to people, groups of people, countries, and animals. It shows a relationship of belonging between one thing and another. To form the possessive, add apostrophe + s to the noun. If the noun is plural, or already ends in s, just add an apostrophe after the s.
Examples:
the car of John = John\'s car
the opinion of people = people\'s opinion
