To speak its language well, how important is it to know something about the culture of a country?

I think It is important to understand culture of country in which people who you want to speak to live.

Sentence in one country could be miscomprehended in other country.

Same word and accent have different meaning in each culture.

Same gestures also could be understood in different way.

If you want to persuade someone, you shoud study their culture in advance.

For example, I am working with middle east engineer of client for building RO Plant.

Sometime, they marked their opinion on our drawings.

This means asking for us to immediate revise in our country.

However, in middle east, comment on drawings are only opinions.

So we do not need to reflect their comments every time.
