To what extent do you shape your own destiny, and how much is down to fate?

To be honest, I’m not confident that I can control my destiny completely. When I was younger, I was a strong advocate for making my own destiny. However, as I grow, I realized that there are many things that happen out of my control. Especially when I hear shocking news such as the sinking of Sewol ferry causing 300 young people dead, 911 disaster in the US, and the sudden death of my colleague because of cancer or an accident, I always wonder whether each individual has its own destiny that can’t be avoided regardless how much effort he makes. Although I am not a fatalist, I admit that we have no control over our destiny for certain things. As a person grows in knowledge he thinks he can control his life and destiny. It is true intellectually, in making decisions rationally. But the factors beyond one's control seem huge and unconquerable. So one can say that one's destiny is only partially under one's control and that one needs to have trust in one's fate. Let's do whatever we can.
