There are two important customs in Korea. They are New Year's Day and Korean Thanksgiving Day. All family members assemble in grandparents or the eldest son's house. So, traffic jams at these days are unbelievable and it takes longer than as usual. On New Year's Day, people always eat rice cake soup called tteokguk. Eating it means growing a year older. And, children bow to adults and receive cash gifts from them. Next, On Korean Thanksgiving Day,people commonly eat half moon-shaped rice cake called songpyeon. It is traditionally said that someone who can make songpyeon pretty can give birth to a pretty daughter. In this respect, we can assume Korean value their family members above the rest.
