This is straightforward, so it may have been the easiest way to punish criminals and to  make people convinced for a long time. However, mankind has built a bright civilization and most people in the world have been educated and are not living by just instinct. We can look into the root of crimes and give sentences to criminals not only for weighing that intensity also for considering edifying their moralities and preventing the regeneration of the sort of crimes.
Moreover, there are countless various types of crimes, so many cases are not able to punish through ‘An eye for an eye.’ Drunken drivers who haven’t caused any accident have to be punished. 
Surely, I sometimes feel that some cruel criminals like sexual offenders have to be treated, at least, as much as they have done to victims, but we shouldn’t ruin our developed legal system just to release our anger toward a few cases judged unacceptably. Focusing on fixing up the loopholes and setting precautions would be much helpful.
