'Give and take' only works when it comes to good things to me. I think if I do some good things for other people, I can recieve the almost equal treatment from him, her or another person. In the short term, it doesn't make a sense but the good deed that I have done until now makes me a better person in the long term. People around me consider me as a good giver so they are willing to help me or give me something. Thus 'give and take' means 'the good deed I have done will return to me' to me.
