What does “happiness” really mean in modern society? Has its meaning changed compared to the past?

Compared to the past, the concept of happiness has changed drastically. Previously, people regarded happiness as a form of economic and social security. When individuals can afford their lifestyle and feel protected, they feel happy. This is because people evaluated happiness from external perspectives. In Korea, it was natural for people to attend university, get decent jobs, get married, purchase a house, and have children. The public regards it as the barometer of happiness. However, modern society tends to focus on internal self. Being mentally stable is more important than claiming material wealth. Rather than constant, ecstatic joy, modern happiness is increasingly understood as a balanced life and mental and physical fitness. Many people are less affected by how those around them feel and regard them, but they focus more on actively navigating and cultivating their own happiness. For example, in Korea, many people decided not to get married and invest elsewhere.
