In some respects, I believe that UK is the country with easy residency requirements. Compared to other European nations which ask foreigner to stay 10 years before applying for resident, 5 years is relatively shorter. However, the most difficult part is that the only years with work visa counts. Even though you stay in UK for more than 10 years you cannot apply for residency if you haven’t stayed in UK as a taxpayer. Since job criteria and work visas are becoming extremely difficult to get, applying for the residency has become more challenging. However, I believe that the requirements should not change because there have been bad actors exploiting loose regulations. During COVID-19, it was relatively easy to apply for the work visa from low level of applicants And there was various foreigners established bogus company to apply for the work visa and citizenship, so UK government tighten the law to restrict industries and application criteria.
