What is the best age to travel? Can children appreciate the experience?

I have experience traveling to overseas countries with my daughter when she was very young like 3 years to 7 years. However, she does not remember anything now about the travels. So for educational purpose and in order to get young kids to learn something from traveling, they must reach certain ages like at least 8 or 9 years. Travel with kids can be a waste if they won’t appreciate an expensive trip. I guess I see it from a cost benefit perspective, since while we all love to travel, we can only afford to do big international trips occasionally. So when they are too young, you can go on a domestic trip because you will be more familiar with how things go and you and kids will get used to traveling together. When is old enough to remember? I remember stuff from international trips at age 10, and studies mostly back up the serious memory formation begins when language is acquired. Children should grow enough to express his opinions about foods, locations, etc.
