Certification organizations provide insight into the company’s ESG (environmental, social and governance) practices, so professionals can verify which companies are committing greenwashing. Also, they provide guidelines to companies to move away from the greenwashing activities. Usually greenwashing comes with vague language such as using terms like “eco-friendly” or “sustainable” without providing specific details or evidence. Then there is misleading data which provide incomplete and manipulated data to suggest a positive environmental effect. Certification organization’s role is to verify validity of the qualitative and quantitative data to provide value added information to professionals. Accordingly, these organizations do not penalize the companies which greenwash their environmentally friendly practices which are done by the local regulators. Also, they do not provide clear guidelines which are provided by standard setting organizations.
