What techniques do you use to remember vocabulary?

In order to remember vocabulary, I make vocabulary lists and test myself frequently. This is the technique I used since when I was a high school student, preparing for English exams. I made up my mind to spend much time on memorizing vocabulary after I got several questions wrong on the most important tests because of confusing words. I made a vocabulary book and wrote down every word I encounter that I don\'t know the exact meaning. I wrote the vocabulary in the left side and the meanings in the right side so that I could hide only one side and test myself if I could match the word and the meaning. This method was not efficient for memorizing hundreds of words in a day, but it was very useful for remembering the words in a long term because I could keep on checking if I memorized well. I have been using this method on important language exams since then.
