From my previous experiences, I learned that housemates should be updated on visitors. This is because visitors would inevitably use shared spaces such as the kitchen, toilets and living room. Since someone will be intruding on private spaces, every member of the household should be informed. If violated, I will warn 3 times and ask my roommate to leave the apartment. Luckily, I was not under those kinds of circumstances. Even though I have been paying full rent, including utilities, I always update roommates about upcoming guests and expect them to know the length of their visit. If the visit is not predicted, I always try to come up with a compensation plan. During recent family visit, I helped my roommate clean the apartment after packing and found a place for her to stay for several months near her new workplace. I think updating the housemate about the guests is the etiquette that needs to be strictly followed to minimize conflict.
