When a new year starts, what’s the first thing you do?

My life is quite monotonous, so there was nothing special even in the first day of this year. I woke up at the same time, ate breakfast and study for a couple of hours. However, my mother made the day a little different with lunch she prepared. There was a traditional food that means we grow a year older through Koreans ate when a year has changed. It is called ‘tteokguk’. Basically, it is a bowl of beef soup which a bunch of sliced rice cakes put into. It could sound a little weird, because we can easily imagine sweet and soft texture when we hear the word ‘cake’, but this rice cake is made of only rice and It is soft but, chewy, so it is a good ingredient. According to provinces, people add others like dumplings. I like this soup especially made by my mother, and it remind me new year has started.
