When is an age gap beneficial, and when is it a hindrance?

In the Korean society, age is very important. We have been educated to respect our elders especially because our society is based on Confucianism. In the Confucian-dominated society, the age hierarchy plays a significant factor in all aspects of our life. You could be regarded as being rude when you rebut or express your opinions that are different from your senior’s. So being older has a lot of advantages in socializing with others. However, there are also disadvantages. Your age could be a hindrance or a major drawback to get a job or to get promoted at the workplace when you are over certain age regardless of your experience and competency. The Korean society is not an exception from the trend of fast changes in all of the areas. In the fast developing society, young people are taking place of the roles of older people and pushing away the elders. It is true that the age gap is getting meaningless in the modern society. Noone will respect you just because you are older than him.
