Which evaluating sytem is better?

Evaluation the student’s progress is one of the major concerns of teachers. Recently, the debate between letter grading and pass-fail grading involves a lot of controversial issues in education circles. Although pass-fail system probably provokes student’s abilities and potential, it is difficult to evaluate students objectively, and to prepare students’ real life challenges as well. To measure student’s abilities obviously, letter system is more reliable than pass-fail system because of its objective criteria. For example, in the English speaking test, the assessment requires certain standards such as fluency, accuracy, vocabulary and grammar. On the contrary, “pass-fail” system adding teacher’s recommendation just depends on the subjectivity of each teacher. In this sense, the teacher’s statement about students causes the distrust of evaluation due to the difference of view of each teacher and the indefinite criteria.
