I searched the term \'grid\'. It refers to \'an electric grid\', or an electric power system network. \'Off the grid\' was also new for me (^^) but now I got to know it thanks to you.
I had a short read about the author, Gretchen Bakke by googleizing. Surprisingly, she is a cultural anthtopologist and has been researching and writing about the transition of electric grid of USA for long. Great!
In fact, I was naturally reminded of the film, <the current war>, reading your writing the day before yesterday.  The film was a story that Nicola Tesla\'s alternating current(AC) won over Tomas Edison\' s direct current (DC). So almost every household is powered by AC now.
Not until I watched the film did I know the fact that the electric car company, Tesla was named after Nicola Tesla in this historical drama film. What an  ignorant person I was!
I think somtimes I\'m a happy cherry picker from your cherry trees of new knowledge.^^
